Soils Technical Assistant – Durham, NC

Three Oaks Engineering is seeking a Technical Assistant to join our expanding soils team in our Durham, NC, office. The successful candidate will assist the field staff by managing tasks associated with work procurement, proposal writing, map production, documents, and marketing efforts. The position can be either part-time or full-time and will be office-based during the training period with potential to work from home afterward. Limited travel or field work is expected for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Willingness to learn a new industry and computer mapping programs.
  • Must be able to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative environment to achieve project deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Geomatic Sciences or similar.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS or other geospatial mapping programs.
  • Experience with CAD.

Three Oaks Welcomes Cody McChane to Our Transit Practice

Durham, NC – September 14, 2022

Three Oaks Engineering is pleased to announce that Cody McChane, AICP, joined our Durham, NC, office, helping expand our growing transit practice!

Cody will serve as a Transportation Planner supporting our clients with transit, bicycle, and pedestrian planning; public engagement; and environmental review. He brings over 10 years of experience in the public and active transportation field. Prior to joining Three Oaks, Cody worked on several planning projects for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and other transit agencies, including two years as an embedded consultant on CTA’s Red Line Extension program management team. More recently, Cody helped design bicycle facilities in the City of Chicago and develop bicycle and pedestrian plans for communities throughout the Chicago region.

“We are excited to continue growing our transit practice, which supports our commitment to sustainable transportation planning,” said Three Oaks President Suzanne Unger Young. Transit practice leader, Meghan Makoid, added “we look forward to offering Cody’s active and public transportation planning experience to our clients.”

He looks forward to getting plugged-in with local transportation advocacy groups, such as Bike Durham, an advocacy organization that Three Oaks actively sponsors to help empower all people to walk, bike, and ride transit more often.

Three Oaks Engineering is seeking a full-time Hydraulic Engineer to join our expanding team in any of our three office locations (Durham, NC; Raleigh, NC; West Columbia/Cayce, SC). Three Oaks is a growing, sustainability-oriented, woman-owned business comprised of talented and motivated individuals focused on helping clients accomplish infrastructure projects with careful consideration of community and environmental needs. The ideal candidate will support our hydraulic engineering and stormwater group within our growing company. Our goal is to offer our clients expanded services in hydrologic analysis and hydraulic engineering for multimodal transportation and other infrastructure projects, Stormwater Control Measures (SCM) planning and design, and resiliency planning. This position will also support our existing services in environmental permitting, SCM inspection, and watershed planning.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Biological & Agricultural Engineering or equivalent education
• Engineer Intern (EI) certification
• Experience in drainage design, bridge and culvert design, H&H analyses, SCM design, erosion and sediment control design, FEMA permitting, and/or Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permitting
• Proficiency with Microstation, Civil3D, and/or Open Road Designer
• Familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic software such as HEC-RAS, HY-8, GEOPAK Drainage, StormCAD, SUDA, and HydroCAD

Preferred Qualifications:
• At least 3 years of experience in hydrologic analysis and hydraulic engineering
• Professional Engineer in North Carolina and/or South Carolina or ability to obtain within 18 months
• Experience on NCDOT and/or SCDOT design projects
• NCDOT Level III Erosion Control Design Certification
• Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
